Dr. Amanda Martens and Dr. Ted Dupmeier, as well as other
veterinarians that have a working arrangement with Cattle Care,
aim to offer service to the Dairy Industry. The Dairy industry has
a great number of questions and we as a consulting practice
welcome these. If there is a fee for the consultation, we will be
sure to let you know before the consultation begins. Fees are
charged only if the question is quite involved. If you decide the
problem is of economic importance we will make sure to have a
veterinarian there, backed by laboratory and referrals if necessary.
Again fees are always discussed before the service to make sure
that you are not surprised. At Cattle Care we have a special
interest in milking machines and mastitis problems and we
welcome your questions.
Dairy News:
Mastitis and High Somatic cell counts:
Dairy producers are seeing somatic cell counts up and new
clinical mastitis, which can end up costing producers a fortune.
Somatic cell count 300:
90 milking cows
3 clinical cases of mastitis/year
Production losses: 16.5 kg/day = 6022.5 kg/yr
$67/100 kg 602 x 67 = $40334/yr
costs of culling and deaths 7468
$47802/yr
How to solve:
*** 1st you must know the culture involved! From here control
measures can be taken. ***
Are you utilizing your DHIA Reports? DHIA Update:
Amanda and Ted have been going thru some DHIA Records. Now,
we at Cattle care are working through DHIA Reports to develop a
sheet for you that will give you pertinent information at a glance.
Each dairy already receives a great deal of information; however,
the information is difficult to organize. Because this information is
invaluable, we are working towards a one sheet report on DHIA
records, a feat which most producers have said would be very
useful. This is a major project, but we plan to have it completed by
the end of August. Any comments would be appreciated.
