Buchneri 40788
Finishes First in independent trial of corn silage inoculants

Biotal Buchneri 40788 is a water soluble silage inoculant containing the patented strain
Lactobacillus buchneri NCIMB 40788.  The Belgian studies showed Biotal Buchneri
40788 had an effect on:

  • Temperature Control: the temperature of Buchneri 40788 treated silage stayed
  • stable at 68'F while the untreated control heated to 90'F
  • Control of DM Losses: DM losses were 4.5 times less for the Buchneri 40788
  • treated silages than the negative control after 7 days exposure to air;
  • Yeast and Mold Control: growth was minimized with Buchneri 40788 treatment.

Silage is the largest part of the daily intake of most rumiants so its quality plays an
important part in animal performance.  Heating results in energy losses, reduced palatability
and intakes.  Energy losses are due to the consumption of sugars and lactic acid by yeasts.
The latter causes the pH to rise, creating ideal conditions for mold development, causing
greater energy and DM losses.  Moreover, some molds produce mycotoxins with negative
consequences on animal health.  Biotal Buchneri 40788 provides a management tool to help
produces prevent heating and spoilage in their silages and also to minimize health risks from
mold growth.

Lallemand, Inc. is a privately held Canadian company specialized in yeast, bacteria, and
yeast derivatives for animal nutrition.

Milwaukee --Biotal(R) BuchneriTM 40788 (marketed in Europe under the brand name Lalsil(R)
Fresh LB), from Lallemand Animal Nutrition, finished first among corn silage inoculants in a
trial conducted at Hogeschool Gent University in Belgium.  The trial analyzed heating and mold
development in silages after opening and Dry Matter (DM) losses after fermentation.  The
independent trial compared Biotal Buchneri 40788 with a negative control, classic silage
innoculants, propionic acid, and Ecocorn.  Other silage inoculant manufacturers were invited to
supply product for testing but refused to participate.  The test was done by the Department of
Crop Husbandry and Ecophysiology of the Belgian Agricultural Research Centre.
